Narrow:

Coach French:Talk about his life lessons he has taught me, the ways he has helped me and the way he puts my needs first.

Structure:

  • Intro:
    • We can all imagine having someone in our lives that was able to turn your life around for the better and teach you how to overcome challenges
    • My high school swim coach was that guy for me
    • When it came to me, it was easy to choose who I wanted to write this appraisal about as he brought me from a low to a high when it comes to something that I am passionate about, swim
    • I am here to give a toast to my mentor, Coach French, as he has been able to teach skills, help me out when I needed it, and put the care of myself and others before himself.
  • Skills:
    • One skill that he taught me is how to be confident in myself
      • At a swim meet I had at Boston University three years ago, he came to watch me perform.
      • He could tell I was nervous for my race and told me to act mean when I swim and care about myself other than the people around me
      • It took me a while to understand what he meant but I took his words into account as I went up to race
      • All I thought about was using aggression and telling myself that I could win
      • This ended up working and I got a best time and qualified for finals during that afternoon
      • That was one out of many moments that he told me to do this, and it has worked through and through
    • Another skill is leadership
      • I have had the opportunity to become a captain of the high school swim team two years in a row
      • While I had this role, each day he would like me to do certain tasks that I would need to complete that pushed me outside my comfort zone
        • This included running the girls team, going to captains meetings, ordering apparel and giving a speech in front of everyone at the banquet
      • I leaned how to take care of the needs of my teammates through his guidance and it help me with my guidance skills for the future
  • Help me with what I needed
    • If I ever needed anything, he was always the first person to help me out
    • There were times where I had a hard time finishing a set in practice, and he would motivate me to finish it out, giving me tips along the way
    • If I needed help giving others advice, I would go to him to make sure what I was telling others was accurate and would actually benefit the person in the future
    • One the middle swim team, I was a high school helped, and if I needed help coaching, he would guide me through it
  • Put our needs first
    • My coach would defend us again all the other teams
      • If there was a drama with another team, he would help with resolving the conflict and make sure that all of us were alright
    • He would let us question what he put us in for meets
      • If we were not confident in swimming a race, we could talk to him and work something out
    • If we had a family emergency, he would make sure that our family member was okay, and would let us take the time to go to deal with the emergency, and would be on call if we needed him at a certain time
  • Conclusion
    • My Coach is truly an idol to me as he has taught me important life skills, has helped me with what I need and has always put my needs first
    • From everything he has done for me, it has shaped me into the person I am today
    • I choose to major in pharmacy, and that takes leadership and confidence to be able to help patients with what they need
    • If I did not learn those skills from him, I may not have chosen this major, going into a complete different field
    • So I thank him for all that he has done for me, and I hope to one day to be able to return the favor
